Agariste dari Sikyon

Agariste (/æɡəˈrɪstiː/; Bahasa Yunani Kuno: Ἀγαρίστη) (skt. abad ke-6 SM, skt. tahun 560 SM) merupakan seorang putri, dan mungkin pewaris tiran Sikyon, Kleisthenes. Ayahandanya ingin menikahkannya dengan "Hellenes terbaik" dan, kemudian ia menyelenggarakan sebuah kompetisi, yang hadiahnya adalah menikahi putrinya sendiri. Menurut deklarasinya itu, seluruh pemuda yang memenuhi syarat harus tampil di Sikyon dalam waktu 60 hari. Akhirnya, dua belas pesaing muncul[1] dan Kleisthenes mengadakan perjamuan untuk menghormati tamunya.

Kleisthenes lebih menyukai mantan Arkhon Hippokleides namun, saat makam malam si pelamar mempermalukan dirinya sendiri. Menurut Herodotos, Hippokleides menjadi mabuk dan mulai bertindak seperti orang bodoh.

Setelah peristiwa malang ini, Megakles dari wangsa Alkmaionid dipilih untuk menikahi Agariste, yang melahirkan dua orang putra, Hippokrates dan Kleisthenes, pembaharu demokrasi Athena. Hippokrates adalah ayahanda dari Megakles lain (dikecualikan tahun 486 SM) dan seorang putri Agariste adalah ibunda Perikles dan Ariphron (sendiri merupakan ayahanda Hippokrates dari Athena yang meninggal pada tahun 424 SM). Putra Kleisthenes yang lebih muda diduga adalah ayahanda Deinomache (atau Dinomache), ibunda Alkibiades (meninggal 404 SM)[2] Dalam skenario keduanya, Agariste adalah nenek moyang Perikles dan Alkibiades. W. K. Lacey merasa bahwa Agariste adalah seorang Epikleros, atau satu-satunya ahli waris yang diminta memiliki anak untuk mengabadikan keluarga ayahandanya.[3]

According to other sources, Pericles's mother and Alcibiades's mother's father were siblings, and Pericles and Deinomache were therefore cousins, which supports the latter contention.
