Beruang hitam amerika (nama ilmiah: Ursus americanus)[3]) adalah spesies beruang yang paling umum dan terkecil dari Amerika Utara. Beruang hitam merupakan omnivora (pemakan daging dan tumbuhan). Beruang hitam biasanya hidup di daerah hutan, tetapi tidak meninggalkan hutan untuk mencari makanan. Kadang-kadang mereka tertarik dengan kegiatan manusia bila kekurangan makanan. Beruang hitam amerika terdaftar oleh IUCN sebagai satwa berisiko rendah, karena spesies ini memiliki populasi global besar dan banyaknya diperkirakan dua kali lipat dari semua spesies beruang lainnya bila digabungkan.[1]

Beruang hitam amerika biasanya melakukan hibernasi selama musim dingin. Selama waktu ini, metabolisme dan denyut jantung beruang hitam mengalami penurunan yang terhubung satu sama lain.[4] Pada kenyataannya, selama hibernasi, jantung seekor beruang hitam amerika bisa berhenti selama dua puluh detik.[4] Suhu tubuh beruang hitam juga menurun sampai 31 °C (88 °F) selama hibernasi.[5] Ketika hibernasi berakhir, suhu tubuh beruang hitam kembali normal. Beruang hitam amerika sering memberi tanda di pohon menggunakan cakar mereka untuk menunjukkan dominansi di suatu daerah. Dominansi ditentukan oleh tanda cakar tertinggi yang ditemukan di pohon. Perilaku ini umum bagi banyak spesies beruang yang terdapat di Amerika Serikat dan Kanada.[1]
