Cepheus adalah suatu rasi bintang di belahan utara yang melambangkan raja legendaris di Ethiopia dalam Mitologi Yunani, yang juga merupakan suami dari Cassiopeia dan ayah dari Andromeda.

Rasi ini adalah salah satu dari 88 rasi bintang modern, dan juga satu dari 48 rasi yang didaftar oleh Ptolemy.

Bintang paling terang dari konstelasi ini adalah Alpha Cephei yang memiliki magnitudo tampak 2.5. Delta Cephei adalah prototipe (model awal) dari pengkategorian kelas bintang yang penting yang disebut dengan variabel Cepheid. RW Cephei, sebuah bintang hypergiant, SW Cephei, VV Cephei, dan V354 Cephei adalah bintang-bintang yang dikenal sebagai bintang-bintang yang paling besar yang diketahui sejauh ini.

Sejarah dan mitologi

Cepheus adalah raja Ethiopia. Cepheus menikah dengan Cassiopeia dan memiliki anak bernama Andromeda, yang keduanya juga diabadikan sebagai rasi bintang modern seperti Cepheus[1].

Ciri-ciri

Alpha Cephei, yang juga disebut Alderamin, adalah bintang paling terang di dalam rasi ini, dengan magnitudo tampak 2.51. Delta Cephei adalah prototipe (model awal) dari Variabel Cepheid, yang merupakan sebuah bintang superraksasa yang berjarak 980 tahun cahaya dari Bumi. Bintang ini ditemukan sebagai variabel oleh John Goodricke pada tahun 1784.

Ada beberapa bintang ganda dan bintang biner di rasi Cepheus. Omicron Cephei adalah sebuah bintang biner dengan periode 800 tahun. Sistem yang berjarak 211 tahun cahaya dari Bumi ini berisi bintang raksasa oranye dengan magnitudo 4.9 dan magnitudo sekunder 7.1.
