Fokaia

Fokaia (bahasa Yunani: Φώκαια; kini bagian dari Foça modern di Turki) adalah kota Yunani Ionia kuno di pesisir barat Anatolia. Orang-orang Yunani dari Fokaia mendirikan koloni Massalia.[1] (Marseille modern, di Prancis) pada 600 SM, Emporion (Empúries modern, di Catalonia, Spanyol) pada 575 SM dan Elea (Velia modern, di Campania, Italia) pada 540 SM.

Fokaia didirikan oleh orang-orang Fokeis atas pimpinan Athena, dan kemudian menjadi anggota Liga Ionia.[2] Fokaia merdeka hingga ditaklukan oleh raja Kroisos dari Lydia.[3] Kota ini lalu direbut oleh Koresh Agung, raja Persia pada tahun 546 SM. Pada tahun 500 SM, Fokaia memberontak terhadap Persia bersama-sama dengan banyak kota Ionia lainnya. Dionysios, seorang tokoh Fokaia, terpilih menjadi komandan armada pemberontak dalam pertempuran melawan Persia pada tahun 494 SM, yang berakhir dengan kemenangan Persia.[4] Setelah Persia mulai mengalami kekalahan oleh pasukan gabungan Yunani, Fokaia bergabung dengan Liga Delos dan membayar upeti sejumkah dua talanton kepada Athena.[5] Pada tahun 412 SM, selama Perang Peloponnesos dengan bantuan Sparta, Fokaia memberontak. Pada tahun 397 SM, Fokaia kembali dikuasai oleh Persia dan pada periode Helenistik kota ini dikuasai oleh Kekaisaran Seleukia. Di kemudian hari, Fokaia direbut oleh Romawi dan menjadi pusat pembuatan wadah keramik. Pada Abad Pertengahan, Fokaia dikuasai oleh Genoa hingga ditaklukan oleh bangsa Turk pada tahun 1455.[6]
