Gerda Lerner ( lahir di Wina pada 30 April 1920 ) adalah seorang perintis dalam kajian sejarah perempuan, dan presiden pertama dalam organisasi Ahli Sejarah Amerika. Peran pentingnya dalam perkembangan kurikulum sejarah perempuan, melengkapi posisisnya pada kajian sejarah perempuan di dunia sejak tahun 1963.

Beliau seorang profesor emeritus di University of WisconsinMadison sekaligus seorang dosen tamu di Duke University, dan ia juga mengajar dibeberapa perguruan tinggi diantaranya di Long Island University ( 1965-1967). Di Universitas tersebut, beliau mendirikan program pascasarjana untuk bidang sejarah perempuan. Sebagai seorang pemerhati perempuan, ia aktif sebagai penggagas seminar tentang perempuan di Columbia University. Beliau meninggal tanggal 20 Januari 2013 di Madison Wisconsin, Amerika serikat pada usia 92 tahun.

Tahun 1980 Lerner adalah Ph.D pertama yang lulus dari jurusan sejarah perempuan. Dan disini Biografi yang ditulis oleh gerda Lerner menempatkan perempuan dalam konteks sosial yang lebih luas. Grimkee Sisters adalah tulisannya yang mengangkat keberanian perempuan kaum abolisionis yaitu pejuang penghapusan perbudakan di Amerika Serikat.[1]

Masa Kecil

Dia lahir dengan nama Gerda Hedwig Kronstein Wina, Austria pada 30 April 1920 anak pertama dari pasangan yahudi Ilona Kronstein dan Robert Kronstein. Ayahnya adalah seorang apoteker dan ibinya adalah seorang senniman. Menurut autobiografinya ia memiliki hubungan yang tidak baik sebagai seorang anak dari keluarga tersebut. Ketika dewasa ia percaya bahwa Ibunya berjuang keras karena ia tidak ceocok dalam peran sebagai Istri dan Ibu di Wina ritkala itu.[2] Gerda memiliki seorang saudara perumpuan dan mereka bersekolah disekolah lokal yang sama.

Setelah Anschluss pada tahun 1938 Lerner terlibat dengan perlawanan anti-Nazi di Austria. Dia dan ibunya dipenjara pada tahun itu setelah ayahnya melarikan diri ke Liechtenstein dan Swiss, tempat dia tinggal selama perang. Ia dipenjara selama enam minggu bersama dua perempuan Kristen yang dipenjara dengan alsan politik. Mereka membagikan makanan dipenjara dengannya karena orang yahudi mendapatkan jatah makanan yang lebih terbatas.[3] Pada Tahun 1939 Ibunya pindah ke Prancis dan saudara perempuannya pindah ke Palsestina, pada tahun itupula ia bermigrasi ke Amerika Serikat dengan sponsor keluarga tunangannya Bobby Jensen.[4]

Kematian

Lerner meninggal pada Januari 2013 di Madison, Wisconsin diusia 92 tahun.[7] Dia meninggalkan anak-anaknya yang sudah dewasa yakni Dan dan Stephanie Lerner.
