Jaringan adiposa cokelat atau lemak cokelat membentuk organ adiposa bersamaan dengann jaringan adiposa putih (atau lemak putih).[1] Jaringan ini dapat ditemukan pada hampir seluruh mamalia. Klasifikasi adiposa cokelat merujuk kepada dua populasi sel berbeda dengan fungsi yang serupa. Yang pertama memiliki asal-usul embriologis yang sama dengan sel otot, yang dapat ditemukan di deposit-deposit "klasik" yang lebih besar. Yang kedua berkembang dari adiposit putih yang terangsang oleh sistem saraf simpatis. Adiposit ini ditemukan secara selang-seling di jaringan adiposa putih, dan terkadang disebut "krem" atau "brite" ("brown in white").[2][3][4][5]

Jaringan adiposa cokelat terkhususnya umum ditemukan di bayi baru lahir dan mamalia berhibernasi.[6] Jaringan ini juga dapat ditemukan, dan aktif secara metabolis pada manusia dewasa,[7][8] namun keberadaan berkurang sekiring bertambahnya usia.[9] Fungsi utamanya adalah termoregulasi. Jaringan ini memproduksi panas dengan termogenesis non-getar. Pentargetan terapeutik jaringan ini sebagai pengobatan obesitas adalah sebuah area penelitian yang aktif.[10][11]

Sebagai kontras dari adiposit putih, yang hanya mengandung satu tetesan lipid, adiposit cokelat memiliki tetesan-tetesan yang lebih kecil, dengan jumlah mitokondria dengan besi tinggi yang lebih banyak, memberi warna ke jaringan ini.[3] Jaringan ini juga memiliki lebih banyak pembuluh kapiler daripada adiposa putih. Kapiler-kapiler ini menyuplai jaringan-jaringan tersebut dengan oksigen dan nutrisi, serta menyebarkan panas yang dihasilkan ke seluruh tubuh.
