Li-yang Lee (kadang-kadang dieja pula Li-young Lee) dilahirkan di Jakarta pada tahun 1957. Ayahnya seorang dokter dan pernah menjadi dokter pribadi Mao Zedong, dan belakangan ikut mendirikan Universitas Gamaliel di Jakarta. Pada tahun 1959, dalam usia 2 tahun, orangtuanya membawanya meninggalkan Indonesia berpindah-pindah ke Hong Kong, Makau, Jepang, dan akhirnya menetap di Amerika Serikat.

Di Amerika ia belajar di Universitas Pittsburgh, Universitas Arizona, dan Universitas Negara New York di Brockport. Ia pun pernah mengajar di Universitas Northwestern dan Universitas Iowa. Lee pernah menulis sejumlah kumpulan puisi, antara lain Book of My Nights (2001), The City in Which I Love You (1990) yang terpilih dalam Lamont Poetry Selection dari Akademi Penyair Amerika untuk tahun 1990, dan Rose (1986) yang mendapatkan Hadiah Puisi Delmore Schwartz Memorial New York University tahun 1986. Memoirnya, The Winged Seed: A Remembrance (1995), mendapatkan American Book Award dari Yayasan Before Columbus.

Ia pernah mendapatkan penghargaan-penghargaan lainnya dari Dewan Kesenian Illinois, Dewan Kesenian Pennsylvania, Dana Seni Nasional, dan fellowship dari Yayasan Guggenheim. Saat ini Lee tinggal di Chicago, Illinois bersama istrinya, Donna, dan kedua anak mereka.

Pada tahun 1998 Lee mendapatkan gelar kehormatan Doctor of Humane Letters dari Universitas Negara New York di Brockport untuk kontribusinya dalam dunia puisi.
