Musik pop atau musik marak adalah sebuah genre musik populer yang berasal dari bentuk modernnya di Amerika Serikat dan Inggris pada pertengahan 1950-an.^[4] Istilah "musik populer" dan "musik pop" sering digunakan secara bergantian, meskipun yang pertama menggambarkan semua musik yang populer dan mencakup banyak gaya yang beragam. "Pop" dan "rock" adalah istilah yang hampir identik dengan musik pop sampai akhir 1960-an, ketika mereka menjadi semakin berbeda satu sama lain.

Meskipun banyak dari musik yang muncul di tangga lagu rekaman dipandang sebagai musik pop, genre ini dibedakan dari musik tangga lagu. Musik pop sering meminjam elemen dari gaya lain seperti urban, dance, rock, Latin, dan country; meski demikian, terdapat banyak elemen inti yang menentukan musik pop. Faktor-faktor pengidentifikasian jenis musik ini meliputi umumnya lagu yang ditulis dengan durasi pendek hingga sedang dalam format dasar, serta penggunaan pengulangan paduan suara, nada melodi, dan kait yang umum.

Definisi dan etimologi

David Hatch dan Stephen Millward mendefinisikan musik pop sebagai "badan musik yang dapat dibedakan dari musik populer, jazz, dan musik folk".^[5] Menurut Pete Seeger, musik pop adalah "musik profesional yang mengacu pada musik rakyat dan musik seni rupa".^[3] Meskipun musik pop dipandang hanya sebagai musik tangga lagu rekaman, tidak semua musik jenis ini merupakan musik tangga lagu. Tangga lagu musik berisi lagu-lagu dari berbagai sumber, termasuk klasik, jazz, rock, dan lagu-lagu baru. Sebagai sebuah genre, musik pop terlihat ada dan berkembang secara terpisah.^[6] Oleh karena itu, istilah "musik pop" dapat digunakan untuk menggambarkan genre yang berbeda, yang dirancang untuk menarik semua orang, sering ditandai sebagai "musik berbasis singel instan yang ditujukan untuk remaja" berbeda dengan musik rock sebagai "musik berbasis album untuk orang dewasa". ^[4]^[8]

Musik pop terus berkembang seiring dengan definisi istilah tersebut. Menurut penulis musik Bill Lamb, musik populer didefinisikan sebagai "musik sejak industrialisasi pada 1800-an yang paling sesuai dengan selera dan minat kelas menengah perkotaan."^[9] The term "pop song" was first used in 1926, in the sense of a piece of music "having popular appeal".^[10] Hatch dan Millward menunjukkan bahwa banyak peristiwa dalam sejarah rekaman pada tahun 1920-an dapat dilihat sebagai kelahiran industri musik pop modern, termasuk dalam country, blues, dan musik hillbilly.^[11]

Menurut situs web The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, istilah "musik pop" "berasal dari Britania Raya pada pertengahan 1950-an sebagai deskripsi untuk rock and roll dan gaya musik anak muda baru yang dipengaruhi".^[2] The Oxford Dictionary of Music menyatakan bahwa sementara pop "makna awal berarti konser menarik bagi khalayak luas[...] sejak akhir 1950-an, bagaimanapun, pop telah memiliki makna khusus mus[ik] non-klasik, biasanya dalam bentuk lagu, yang dilakukan oleh seniman seperti the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, ABBA, dll."^[12] Grove Music Online juga menyatakan bahwa "[...] pada awal 1960-an, [istilah] 'musik pop' bersaing secara terminologis dengan musik beat [di Inggris], sementara di Amerika Serikat, cakupannya tumpang tindih (seperti yang masih terjadi) dengan 'rock and roll'".^[2]
