Nathaniel Brown Palmer

Nathaniel Brown Palmer (1799-1877) adalah seorang pelaut Amerika yang berkontribusi dalam eksplorasi Antartika.[1] Ia pergi ke laut sejak usia 14 tahun.[1] Ketika sedang mencari tempat perkembangbiakan anjing laut pada tahun 1920, ia melihat Semenanjung Palmer (sekarang dikenal sebagai Semenanjung Antartika).[1] Pada tahun 1921 ia bersama George Powell menemukan Pulau Orkney Selatan.[1] Pada usia sembilan belas tahun ia menjadi awak sekunar kecil sebelum begrabung dengan awak kapal Hersilla yang berada di bawah komando James Sheffield.[2] Kapal Hersilla berlayar ke selatan pada akhir Juli 1819 untuk berburu anjing laut di Atlantik Selatan.[2] Lalu, pada Mei 1820 Kapak Hersilla kembali ke Stonington dan mengakhiri perjalanannya.[2] Pada 16 November 1920 Palmer berlayar ke selatan, 60 mil melintasi Selat Bransfield dan mencapai pantai Antartika yang dekat dengan Pulau Trinity di ujung timur Selat Orleans.[2] Setelah itu, pada Febuari 1921 ia bertemu dengan dua kapal Rusia di bawah komando Thaddeus von Bellinghausen di Shetlands Selatan.[2]
