Pembunuhan para rahib Tibhirine

Pada malam 26–27 Maret 1996, tujuh rahib dari Biara Atlas di Tibhirine, dekat Médéa, Aljazair, yang berasal dari Ordo Katolik Roma Sistersia (dikenal sebagai Trapis) diculik pada masa Perang Saudara Aljazair. Mereka ditahan selama dua bulan, dan ditemukan tewas pada akhir Mei 1996.

Peristiwa penculikan dan kematian mereka masih kontroversial; Kelompok Islamis Bersenjata (Groupe Islamique Armé, GIA) mengklaim pertanggungjawaban untuk kedua peristiwa tersebut, namun pada 2009, pensiunan Jenderal François Buchwalter mengabarkan bahwa para rahib tersebut tak sengaja dibunuh oleh angkatan darat Aljazair.[2]

Biara Tibhirine

Sekitar 1:15 AM pada 27 Maret 1996, sekitar dua puluh anggota Grup Islamis Bersenjata datang ke biara Tibhirine dan menculik tujuh rahib. Dua lainnya, Romo Jean-Pierre dan Romo Amédée, berada di ruangan terpisah dan terabaikan dari sergapan para penculik tersebut. Setelah para penculik pergi, para rahib yang terpisah berupaya untuk menghubungi polisi, namun menyadarai bahwa jaringan teleponnya diputus. Sehingga, mereka menunggu sampai pagi untuk datang ke kantor polisi di Médéa.

Dua rahib Tibhirine yang selamat meninggalkan Aljazair dan pindah ke sebuah biara Trapis di dekat Midelt, Maroko.[3]

Rahib

Seluruh tujuh rahib yang tewas adalah orang Prancis. Mereka adalah: Dom Christian de Chergé, Burder Luc (lahir dengan nama Paul Dochier), Romo Christophe (Lebreton), Bruder Michel (Fleury), Romo Bruno (lahir dengan nama Christian Lemarchand), Romo Célestin (Ringeard), dan Bruder Paul (Favre-Miville).
