Saraf trigeminus adalah saraf yang berperan dalam mengirimkan sensasi dari kulit bagian anterior kepala, rongga mulut dan hidung, gigi dan meninges(Lapisan otak). Saraf Trigeminus memiliki tiga divisi (mata/oftalmik, rahang atas/maksilaris dan rahang bawah/mandibula) yang selanjutnya diperlakukan sebagai saraf-saraf terpisah. Pada divisi mandibula terdapat juga serabut saraf motorik yang mensarafi otot-otot yang digunakan dalam mengunyah.[1] Saraf Trigeminus merupakan saraf campuran di mana sebagian besar merupakan serat saraf sensoris wajah, dan sebagian yang lain merupakan serat saraf motoris dari otot mastikasi.[2]

Perlekatan saraf trigeminus dan pembagian divisi

  • Saraf trigeminus menempel di ke aspek lateral pons, dekat pedunculus cerebellar tengah. Kemudian saraf trigeminus melewati bagian bawah bawah tentorium cerebelli, menuju fosa kranial bagian tengah.
  • Ganglion sensoris dari saraf trigemus dapat ditemukan pada bagian bawah dari tulang temporal. Untuk serat saraf sensoris terbagi menjadi 3, yakni: oftalmik (Va), maksilaris (Vb), dan mandibula (Vc).[1]

Ganglion Trigeminal

Ganglion ini berisi badan sel dari sel saraf sensorik primer pada ketiga divisi sensoris saraf trigeminus, kecuali yang berasal dari sel saraf proprioseptif. Ganglion trigeminal dikelilingi oleh cairan serebrospinal di reses dari ruang subarachnoid: trigeminal, atau gua Meckel.[1]
