United Defense M42 (kadang disebut Marlin) adalah sebuah pistol mitraliur buatan Amerika pada Perang Dunia II. Senjata ini diprodukasi pada 1942 sampai 1943 oleh United Defense Supply Corporation untuk menggantikan senapan submesin Thompson dan digunakan oleh para agen Office of Strategic Services (OSS).[1]

Senjata ini dipesan sebagai pistol mitraliur komersial oleh United Defense Supply Corporation, M42 menjadi submachine gun andalan dari OSS dan gerakan bawah tanah yang berafiliasi dengannya. Maklum saja, UD sebenarnya adalah sebuah perusahaan samaran yang membeli seluruh barang kebutuhan dari agen rahasia Amerika Serikat yang membantu gerakan perlawanan Eropa, terutama yang beroperasi dari wilayah laut tengah. Dibangun berdasarkan rancang bangun dari pistol mitraliur Thompson M1928, dengan menghilangkan pistol grip, namun tetap menempatkan grip depan, M42 bekerja dengan mekanisme penembakan yang terbilang sangat sederhana, dari receiver silinder. Satu terobosan dari SMG ini adalah adanya fitur unggulan berupa penyempurnaan dari magazen Thompson yang menjadi rujukannya. Magazen M42 memiliki fitur kaitan pada sisi depannya, sehingga dua magazen dapat ditempel berurutan, mempercepat proses penggantian magazen. Aksi pasukan yang menggunakan pistol mitraliur M42 yang paling fenomenal adalah saat pistol mitraliur ini digunakan oleh agen SOE Mayor Patricck Leigh Fermor dan Mayor Stanley Moss dalam peristiwa penculikan Mayor Jenderal Karl kriepe, panglima pasukan Jerman di pulau Kreta.
