Limburg (Nederlands: Limburg, Frans: Limbourg, Duits: Limburg, Limburgs: Limburg) is 'n Belgiese provinsie in Vlaandere. Die provinsie het 'n bevolking van sowat 895 000 in 2023 gehad en beslaan 'n oppervlakte van 2 427 km² met 'n bevolkingsdigtheid van 369 per km². Die hoofstad is Hasselt.

Geografie

Limburg lê in die noordooste van België. Die provinsie grens in die noorde aan die Nederlandse provinsie Noord-Brabant, in die noordooste en die ooste aan die Nederlandse provinsie Limburg, in die suide aan die Waalse provinsie Luik, in die suidweste aan die provinsie Vlaams-Brabant en in die noordweste aan die provinsie Antwerpen.

Limburg bestaan uit die Kempen in die noorde, die Haspengouw in die suide, die Maasland met die grensrivier Maas in die ooste en die eksklawe Voerstreek ('n uitloper van die Ardenne-bergreeks) in die suidooste.

Limburg is 'n bosryke en glooiende provinsie. Die hoogste punte lê in die dorp Remersdaal (287,5 m) (munisipaliteit Voeren in die Voerstreek)[3] en is die Galgenboom (151 m) in die dorp Millen (munisipaliteit Riemst in die Haspengouw).

Geskiedenis

Die Belgiese provinsie Limburg val ongeveer saam met die ou graafskap Loon. In 1795 het die Franse veroweraars die departement Beneden-Maas geskep, wat grotendeels ooreenkom met die provinsies Limburg in België en Nederland. Na die ontstaan van die Verenigde Koninkryk van die Nederlande is die naam in 1815 in Limburg gewysig. Na die onafhanklikheid van België is in 1839 die provinsie in Belgies en Nederlands Limburg verdeel.

Tale

In die provinsie word naas Nederlands ook die Limburgse dialek gepraat, met uitsondering van die (noord)westelike munisipaliteite Lommel, Leopoldsburg, Ham (gedeeltelik) en Tessenderlo, waar naas Nederlands die Brabantse dialek gebesig word.
