Anna Jane Harrison (23 d'avientu de 1912, Benton City (es) Traducir – 8 d'agostu de 1998, Holyoke (es) Traducir) foi una química orgánica d'Estaos Xuníos y profesora de Química nel Mount Holyoke College mientres cuasi cuarenta años. Primeros años y educación

Anna Harrison nació'l 23 d'avientu de 1912 en Benton City, Missouri. Yera fía de los granxeros Albert Harrison y Mary Katherine Jones Harrison. El so padre morrió cuando Anna tenía siete años, dexando a la madre al cargu d'alministrar la granxa familiar y curiar de los dos fíos de la pareya.[8] Interesar por primer vegada na ciencia mientres asistía a la escuela secundaria en Mexico, Missouri. Llogró la llicenciatura en Química en 1933, una llicenciatura n'Educación en 1935, la maestría en Química en 1937 y un doctoráu en Física Química en 1940, toos na Universidá de Missouri.[4]

Carrera

Mientres estudiaba pa llograr el so títulu de maestría en Química, Harrison impartió clases d'educación primaria nuna escuela rural d'una sola aula nel condáu de Audrain, Missouri, onde estudiara cuando yera neña.[3][9] Depués enseñó Química nel H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, el colexu pa muyeres de la Universidá de Tulane, de 1940 a 1945.[4] Ausentar de la enseñanza en 1942, mientres la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y condució delles investigaciones secretes na Universidá de Missouri.[4] Realizó una investigación sobre'l fumu tóxico en 1944, pal Comité d'Investigación de la Defensa Nacional; la AJ Griner Co. de Kansas City, Missouri; y la Corning Glass Works de Corning, Nueva York.[9] Los sos afayos fueron instrumentales na creación d'equipos de detección de fumu pal Exércitu de los Estaos Xuníos.[4] Por esti trabayu recibió'l Premiu Frank Forrest de l'American Ceramic Society.[9]

Xunir al departamentu de Química en Mount Holyoke College en 1945, pa trabayar como profesora asistente cola profesora ya investigadora Emma P. Carr.[3][5] Convertir en profesora titular en 1950 y foi xefa del departamentu de 1960 a 1966. Mientres trabayaba na universidá, tamién emprestó los sos servicios na National Science Board de 1972 a 1978.[4] Retirar del Mount Holyoke College en 1979 y dempués de la so xubilación enseñó na Academia Naval de los Estaos Xuníos en Annapolis, Maryland.[7] Convertir na primer muyer presidenta de l'American Chemical Society en 1978[5] y tamién desempeñó'l cargu de presidenta de l'Asociación d'Estaos Xuníos pa la Meyora de la Ciencia en 1983.

Como educadora ya investigadora, Harrison trabayó con munches organizaciones científiques nos Estaos Xuníos, particularmente la American Chemical Society,[10] l'Asociación d'Estaos Xuníos pa la Meyora de la Ciencia, l'Association of American Colleges and Universities, el American Chemistry Council, la Education Commission of the States, el Llunar and Planetary Institute, l'Academia Nacional de Ciencies, el Conseyu Nacional d'Investigación, la National Science Board y la Fundación Nacional pa la Ciencia.[9] Como representante d'estes organizaciones realizó dellos viaxes, foi a la India pa la Fundación Nacional pa la Ciencia en 1971; a L'Antártida pal National Science Board en 1974; a Xapón, España y Tailandia como presidente de la American Chemical Society en 1978; y a la India nevamente pa l'Asociación d'Estaos Xuníos pa la Meyora de la Ciencia en 1983.[9]

La investigación de Harrison centrar na estructura de los compuestos orgánicos y la so interacción cola lluz, particularmente nes bandes ultravioleta y ultravioleta alloñada. Recibió una subvención de la Xunta Asesora del Fondu d'Investigación Petrolera de la American Chemical Society pa «un estudiu esperimental de los espectros d'absorción ultravioleta alloñada y productos de fotodescomposición de compuestos orgánicos escoyíos».[9] Escribió artículos pa Journal of the American Chemical Society, Chemical & Engineering News y Encyclopædia Britannica. Foi miembru de los conseyos editoriales del Journal of College Science Teaching de la National Science Teachers Association y de Chemical & Engineering News. Foi coautora del llibru de testu Chemistry: A Search to Understand (1989), xunto con Edwin S. Weaver, colega de Mount Holyoke College.[11]

Siempres tuvo interesada en consiguir que s'aumentar el financiamiento pa la educación científica per parte d'axencies estatales y federales y en promover la causa de la integración de les muyeres na ciencia.[9] Finó'l 8 d'agostu de 1998 n'Holyoke, Massachusetts, a la edá d'ochenta y cinco años por causa de un derrame cerebral.[3][12]
