Tony Joe White (23 de xunetu de 1943, Oak Grove – 24 d'ochobre de 2018, Nashville)[4] foi un cantante d'Estaos Xuníos, compositor y guitarrista, más conocíu pol so hit de 1969 «Polk Salad Annie» y pol estándar «Rainy Night in Georgia», que foi fechu popular por Brook Benton en 1970. Tamién escribió «Steamy Windows» y «Undercover Agent for the Blues», dambos hits para Tina Turner en 1989; aquellos dos cantares fueron encargos del productor de Turner naquella dómina, Mark Knopfler, amigu de White.

Biografía

Foi'l más nuevu de siete hermanos y creció nuna granxa d'algodón cerca de Oak Grove, Luisiana. Primero empieza a actuar en bailles escolares y dempués de graduase nel institutu actúa en clubes nocherniegos en Texas y Luisiana.[5]

Años 1960 y 1970

En 1967, White firma con Monument Records, que tenía un estudiu de grabación en Nashville, nel suburbiu de Hendersonville, en Tennessee y producía música rock, country y rhythm and blues. Billy Swan yera'l so productor.

Nos siguientes trés años publicó cuatro singles ensin ésitu comercial nos EE. UU., a pesar de que «Soul Francisco» foi un hit en Francia. «Polk Salad Annie» fuera publicada nueve meses antes y considerada como un fracasu pol so sellu discográficu, cuando finalmente entró nes llistes d'Estaos Xuníos en xunetu de 1969. Xube hasta'l Top Diez n'agostu y llogra finalmente'l núm. 8, siendo'l mayor ésitu de White.

En setiembre de 1973 foi reclutado pol productor Huey Meaux pa participar en Memphis nes sesiones del álbum de Jerry Lee Lewis, Raigaños Del Sur. Estes sesiones de tres díes axuntaron a los orixinales MGs (Steve Cropper, Donald «Duck» Dunn y Al Jackson, Jr. de Booker T. and the MGs) per primer vegada en trés años y tamién a Carl Perkins, Mark Lindsay (de Paul Revere & the Raiders) y Wayne Jackson más The Memphis Horns.

Años 1980

De 1976 a 1983, White publicó tres álbumes más, cada unu nuna discográfica distinta. Probando combinar el so rock de banzáu (swamp rock) cola música de discoteca popular naquel tiempu, los resultaos nun tuvieron ésitu y dexó la so carrera como cantante, concentrándose na composición de cantares.

Años 1990 y torna

En 1989 White produció una pista del álbum Foreign Affair de Tina Turner, el restu del álbum foi producíu por Dan Hartman. Tocó dellos preseos nel álbum y tamién escribió cuatro canciones, incluyendo'l cantar de títulu y el hit «Steamy Windows».[6] Arriendes de esto, Roger Davies, quién yera'l mánager de Turner nesa dómina pasa a representalo y llogra un contratu nuevu con Polydor.

L'álbum resultante de 1991 foi Closer to the Truth, que foi un ésitu comercial. Publica dos álbumes más para Polydor: The Path of a Decent Groove y Lake Placid Blues el cual foi coproducido por Roger Davies.

Nos 1990s, White visitó Alemaña y Francia con Joe Cocker y Eric Clapton y en 1992 actúa nel Festival de Montreux.

En 1996 Tina Turner publicó'l cantar «On Silent Wings» escrita por White.

Años 2000

Nel añu 2000, Hip-O Records publicaron One Hot July nos EE. UU., siendo'l so meyor llanzamientu en 17 años. Dempués criticar aclamó The Beginning qu'apaeció en Swamp Records en 2001, siguíos por Heroines, presentando dellos duos con vocalistas qu'incluyeron a Jessi Colter, Shelby Lynne, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams y Michelle White, nel sellu Sanctuary, en 2004 y l'álbum Live from Austin, TX, grabáu n'Austin City Limits y publicáu por New West Records en 2006. En 2004 White foi l'artista convidáu nun episodiu del espectáculu de televisión Lleendes del Rock, producíu por Megabien.

En 2007 publicó otru rexistru en vivu, Take Home the Swamp, según la escoyeta Introduction to Tony Joe White. La cantante Elkie Brooks grabó un de los sos cantares «Out of The Rain» nel so álbum de 2005 Electric Lady.
