How does it feel to run injured but end up in a crocodile's mouth?
A terrible tragedy occurred about 78 years ago. The tragedy was the massacre of Japanese soldiers on Ramree Island by a giant reptile weighing hundreds of kilograms.
The massacre was the deadliest crocodile attack on humans recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
1945 was the year the Japanese imperial invasion of Asia ended. The Japanese army was attacked by the Allied forces in full force.
Ramree Island is located on the South Coast of Burma, Myanmar. Japan captured the island in 1942 and defeated the British navy. However, the British attacked again and tried to retake Ramree and the nearby island of Cheduba.
After a bloody but victorious attack against the Japanese, British troops forced nearly 1,000 enemy troops into a 16-kilometre-long mangrove swamp.
Unfortunately, the Japanese troops got into the wrong place. The mangrove swamps on Ramree Island are home to an unknown number of saltwater crocodiles.
This crocodile is the biggest reptile killer in the world. These prehistoric animals can grow up to 6 meters long and weigh more than 907 kilograms in some cases.
While giant saltwater crocodiles are rare, medium-sized species can quickly kill humans.
With the condition of the Japanese soldiers who were injured and sick when they visited the swamp, they were immediately caught by a crocodile when they fell behind a mangrove forest. This ferocious crocodile suddenly appears out of nowhere and immediately drags its victim under the water.
About 1000 Japanese soldiers were terrified in the mangrove swamp of Ramree. About 500 of them managed to escape the mangrove swamp with 20 of these being taken back by British troops. The remaining 500 are said to have never made it out of the swamp.
Several months after the tragedy, special military forces launched an investigation into what happened.
Investigations found victims every three meters in the swamp. In addition, about 24 percent of the water in the mangrove swamps of Ramree contains human blood. It is confirmed that the victims of the crocodile attack were Japanese soldiers.
This incident was later recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the deadliest attack ever recorded in history.
