Windows Registry

Windows Registry (registar) je baza podataka koja je sastavni dio operativnih sistema Microsoft Windows i u kojoj su zabilježena podešavanja operativnog sistema i korisničkog okruženja, podaci o instaliranim programima, računarskoj opremi i svi drugi podaci vezani za pravilno funkcionisanje računarskog sistema. Na ovaj način su organizovani svi 32-bitni i 64-bitni windowsi, kao i Mobilni Windowsi.

Kada se prvi put pojavio u Windowsima 3.1, primarna svrha registra je bila spremanje konfiguracijskih informacija za komponente bazirane na COM-u. S pojavom Windowsa 95 i NT, njegova se uloga proširila i na konfiguracijska podešavanja za aplikacije koje su prethodno koristile .ini fajlove.

Uloga

Nekada su za aplikacije postojale .ini fajlovi u koje su programi spremali sopstvena podešavanja. Često su se nalazile na zajedničkoj lokaciji što je, u slučaju više korisnika, onemogućavalo da svaki ima svoja podešavanja. Kontrastno, registar sprema sva aplikacijska podešavanja u jedan središnji repozitorijum i to u standardizovanom obliku. Ovo ima više dobrih strana u odnosu na .ini fajlove.

Također, registar omogućava da više korisnika dijeli isti računar, kao i da programi rade za korisnike koji nisu administratori. Backup je isto tako jednostavniji, jer se registru može pristupiti preko mrežne veze za udaljeni pristup i menadžment.
