Die 1. divisjon 2001 war die insgesamt 39. Spielzeit der zweithöchsten norwegischen Fußballliga und die elfte unter dem Namen 1. divisjon. Die Saison begann am 21. April und endete am 28. Oktober 2001.

Modus

Die Liga wurde zur Saison 2001 von 14 auf 16 Mannschaften aufgestockt. Jedes Team spielte hierbei einmal zu Hause und einmal auswärts gegen jedes der fünfzehn anderen Teams. Dadurch absolvierte jede Mannschaft im Verlauf einer Saison 30 Spiele.

Meister Vålerenga Oslo und der Zweite Start Kristiansand stiegen direkt in die Tippeligaen auf. Der Drittplatzierte Ham-Kam hatte noch die Chance in der Relegation gegen den Drittletzten der Tippeligaen.[1]

Die letzten vier Mannschaften FK Mandalskameratene, Kongsvinger IL, Kjelsås Fotball und Byåsen Toppfotball stiegen in die 2. divisjon ab.
