Aman Sehrawat (born 16 July 2003)[2] is an Indian freestyle wrestler. He is the youngest Indian to win an individual Olympic medal, having secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.[3] Sehrawat has also won gold at U17 Asian Championships, U17 World Championships, U23 Asian Championships, U23 World Championships, and the Asian Wrestling Championships.[4]

Early life

Sehrawat was born on 16 July 2003 in the village of Birohar, Haryana, where he initially took part in mud wrestling. Inspired by Sushil Kumar's silver medal win in the 2012 Summer Olympics, he enrolled at the Chhatrasal Stadium in North Delhi at the age of 10.[5][6] He lost both of his parents at the age of 11. Following their deaths, Sehrawat and his younger sister, Puja, were taken in by their uncles. His Uncle Sudhir revealed in an interview with Hindustan Times that Aman struggled with depression and anxiety after his mother's death. However, his fortunes began to change with his training at Chhatrasal Stadium.[7]

Career

Aman Sehrawat began his wrestling training at North Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium, a renowned training ground for emerging wrestling talent. There, he trained under Coach Lalit Kumar.[8] In 2022, following his gold medal at the Under-23 Asian Championships, Sehrawat became the first-ever Indian to win a gold medal at the Under-23 World Championships.[9]

Sehrawat won his first National Championship title in 2021. He used to train under coach Lalit Kumar.[5]

In April 2023, he won the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana.[10][11] He then won a bronze medal in the 57 kg category at the 2022 Asian Games.[6][12]

In January 2024, he won the gold medal in the men's 57kg event at the Zagreb Open wrestling tournament, defeating all his opponents by technical superiority.[13]

Sehrawat competed at the 2024 World Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament in Istanbul and earned India a quota place for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.[14] The WFI picked him over Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi Kumar Dahiya for the 2024 Olympics.[15] He was the only Indian male wrestler to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics.[16]

In the men's 57 kg event at the 2024 Olympics, he defeated Vladimir Egorov and Zelimkhan Abakarov via technical superiority, before losing to the top-seed Rei Higuchi in the semifinal.[17] He won the bronze medal by defeating Darian Cruz 13–5, becoming the youngest Indian to win an individual Olympic medal at 21 years and 24 days.[18][19]
