Charles "Chuck" Theodore Hurley III is an American academic administrator.[2] He currently serves as the Assistant Vice President & University Registrar at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.[3]
Biography
Hurley served as interim University Registrar in 2011 and was promote to University Registrar soon after.[4] He has also served as the Director of the Summer Session since May 1, 2009.[5] Before appointment as University Registrar, Hurley was Associate Registrar responsible for operational activities from 2003 until 2011. He has served in the Office of the Registrar since 1996.
He was President of the Indiana Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (IACRAO) from 2008 to 2009 and served on its executive committee from 2006 to 2010.[6] He was Chair of the Information Technology Committee for Indiana Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (IACRAO) from 2000 to 2002.[7]
In 2015, he won the Creative & Innovative NAASS Award from North American Association of Summer Sessions.[8][9] In 2019, he was part of the team that won the “University of Notre Dame Team Irish Award” for constructing the Academic Course Management Application that greatly simplified the complex task of reviewing dozens of courses for the university's new Core Curriculum.[10]
Hurley has been cited and interviewed in a multitude of national publications on topics as a leader in the academic administration of student records and data. In 1999, he gave his first interview on then emerging degree audit software at the University of Notre Dame that resulted in a cover story for the Chronicle of Higher Education.[11] Hurley spoke with the Chicago Tribune, Chronicle of Higher Education, and ABC News in 2011, when one of his first steps as University Registrar was to cease the use of sheepskin for diplomas.[12][13][14] Due to his leadership, Hurley has been cited by peers and wrote pieces for Inside Higher Ed[15][16] and College & University Journal.[17] His academic system expertise have also led him to be a requested guest on webinars and podcasts.[18]
In the late 1900s, Hurley oversaw the development and deployment of Notre Dame's earliest internet enabled systems that allowed students and faculty, for the first time, to access academic data online. These included degree audit, class search, student schedule, roll call, and online photo applications.[19]
Prior to his career in academic administration, he was a software developer at the Associates Bancorp, a subsidiary of Citibank.
Personal life and family
Hurley is the son of former South Bend Chief of Police Chuck Hurley Jr.[20] and Joan Hurley (née Horvath; born 1948). Hurley and his wife, Elizabeth Hurley (judge), have four children. Hurley is an avid athlete who has participated in over 100 triathlons, duathlons, and aquathlons, as well as numerous marathons, half marathons, and various distance running races.[21]
On his mother's side, Hurley is a member of the Horvath family. The Horvath family has been one of the more prominent athletic families in northern Indiana over the last century. His cousin Zander Horvath has been on NFL rosters as a fullback for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, Pittsburgh Steelers in 2023, and New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins in 2024, in addition to starting at running back for Purdue University and Marian High School (Indiana).[22] His cousin Ryan Horvath was an NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major All-America punter for Drake University, attended preseason NFL camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2006, and was signed by the New York Sentinels of the United Football League (2009–2012) in 2009. Uncles Bob, Kevin, and Brian Horvath were Indiana All-State football players at Washington High School (South Bend, Indiana) during the 1970s & 1980s. Kevin Horvath was also the quarterback of Washington high school's 1973 3A state championship team.[23] Uncle Charles, and cousins Mark and Brad own and operate a professional race car team.[24] Hurley and his brothers Chad and Christian played football and wrestled at St. Joseph High School (South Bend, Indiana), winning sectional and regional championships. In 1995, Christian Hurley was an All-State fullback on the Indiana 3A state championship football team,[25] as well as being a two-time state qualifier at the Indiana state wrestling championship.[26] Sister Angela (née Hurley) Habetz was a two-time swimming state finalist in the 50 & 100 freestyle for St. Joseph High School (South Bend, Indiana) in 1997 & 1998.[27] His son Rockne Hurley was academic All-State and All-Conference defensive end in football, a member of the 2017 and 2015 state runner-up football team, and a two-time All-State wrestler at Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, placing fifth in 2019.[28][29] Rockne Hurley was also a Folkstyle wrestling All-American placing 4th at the USA Wrestling Cliff Keen Folkstyle National Championships at the University of Northern Iowa in 2016,[30] as well as placing 1st in the middle school division at the prestigious Flo Nationals tournament in Pennsylvania in 2015.
