Chemical compound
Gadolinium acetylacetonate is a coordination compound with the formula Gd(C5 H7 O2 )3 . This anhydrous acetylacetonate complex is widely discussed but unlikely to exist per se. The 8-coordinated dihydrate Gd(C5 H7 O2 )3 (H2 O)2 is a more plausible formula based on the behavior of other lathanide complexes. It has also been characterized twice by X-ray crystallography .[ 2] [ 3]
Upon heating under vacuum, the dihydrate converts to the oxo-cluster Gd4 O(C5 H7 O2 )10 . This behavior is also observed for europium acetylacetonate , yttrium acetylacetonate , lanthanum acetylacetonate , and erbium acetylacetonate .[ 4]
Uses
Gadolinium acetylacetonate, along with cerium acetylacetonate , can be used as precursors to synthesize gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) gel powders using the sol-gel method. [ 5]
