Hong Kong actor (1958–2023)
Mang Hoi (Chinese: 孟海; 1 May 1958 – 9 October 2023) was a Hong Kong actor and action director.[1] He won the Best Supporting Actor at the 5th Hong Kong Film Awards for Yes, Madam.[2] He is perhaps best known for his roles as Aspirin in the 1985 action film Yes, Madam, and Hoi in the 1986 action thriller film Legacy of Rage.
Biography
Early life
Mang was born in Hong Kong on 1 May 1958.
Acting career
In the 1980s, Mang played Yan in the 1985 action comedy film Heart of Dragon, alongside Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan. Mang played Aspirin in the 1985 action film Yes, Madam, alongside Michelle Yeoh, Cynthia Rothrock, and John Shum. Mang played Hoi in the 1986 action thriller film Legacy of Rage, with Michael Wong and Bruce Lee's late son Brandon Lee. Mang played Hai in the 1989 action thriller film Lady Reporter with Cynthia Rothrock.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Mang played Little Hoi in the 1990 comedy horror film Encounters of the Spooky Kind II, with Sammo Hung. Mang played Henchman ("Room service") in the 1993 action comedy film City Hunter, with Jackie Chan. Mang played Copy in the 1996 film The Stunt Woman, with Michelle Yeoh and Sammo Hung. Mang played Faday in the 2002 film Perfect Education 3 with Naoto Takenaka and Kana Ito. Mang played Policeman in the 2004 comedy film Osaka Wrestling Restaurant, with Sammo Hung and his real life son Timmy. After the film, Mang took hiatus from acting.
In 2013, Mang returned to acting after 9 year hiatus, and played Chess Onlooker in the 2013 film Ip Man: The Final Fight, with Anthony Wong. In 2014, Mang played Human Gang Leader in the 2014 film Kung Fu Jungle, along with Donnie Yen. After the film, Mang retired from acting at the age of 56.
Personal life and death
Mang dated American actress and martial artist Cynthia Rothrock. He was married to another woman with a daughter at the time.[3] On 9 October 2023, Mang died of oesophageal cancer at the age of 65.[4]
