Mundaka wave

The Mundaka wave is a surfing location in Mundaka, Basque Country, Spain, and is often considered one of the world's best.

Swells r,oll in from the Bay of Biscay and slam into the rocky coastline of Basque Country. The estuary at Mundaka created a perfect sandbar that forms hollow waves. Mundaka was formerly a site for the World Championship Tour of Surfing. Surfers include Andy Irons, Taj Burrow, Kelly Slater, Mark Occilupo, and Joel Parkinson.

The wave is “perfect” for surfing one of every three days of the year. During winter, the possibility of surfing surpasses 50%. In January, 62% of days are surfable.

History

Billabong Pro Mundaka is one of the most important tests of the ASP World Tour. It is celebrated in Mundaka from the beginning of October until mid-month. In eight years the event has had to be suspended twice. First, in 2001, due to the 9/11 attacks in New York. Second, in 2005 by the hand of man.

Disappearance

The wave disappeared temporarily in 2005 due to the dredging of the nearby river mouth that changed ocean dynamics, causing economic slowdowns in the local area.[1][2] Due to this, the 2005 Billibong Pro World Championship was cancelled.[2]

The extraction in 2003 of almost 300,000 cubic meters of sand laughs of Urdaibai, caused the most famous left wave of Europe would lose its position in match WCT of the ASP[clarification needed]. The wave characteristics changed drastically. The typical tube of 400 meters diminished to only 40 meters. Thus the ASP suspended the 2004 test. Mundaca, which had received an average of 10,000 visitors for the event, lost its main attraction and the region suffered. Studies of the department of Environment and the University of the Basque Country (UPV) reported that the wave was debilitated by the drainage for the shipyard of Murueta. The sand was deposited on the beach of Laida and finished changing the of the marine bottom structure and the currents. Over time the ocean reestablished the bottom structure as it had existed before 2003. After months of study, ASP and Billabong returned Mundaca to the calendar.
