Established in the 1870s, Sidney was originally known as Jimmie's Creak or Round Mountain before being named after the community's first postmaster, Sidney Strapp. In the 1940s, the community had two hundred people, a school, and several churches and businesses.[2] The community's population was 148 in 2010.[3]
Although Sidney is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP Code 76474.[4]
The community's first school was founded in 1877. W.D. Cox was the teacher there. It continued to operate in 1940.[2] The Sidney Independent School District serves area students.
