Sidney is an unincorporated community in Comanche County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas,[citation needed] the community had a population of 196 in 2000.

History

Established in the 1870s, Sidney was originally known as Jimmie's Creak or Round Mountain before being named after the community's first postmaster, Sidney Strapp. In the 1940s, the community had two hundred people, a school, and several churches and businesses.[2] The community's population was 148 in 2010.[3]

Although Sidney is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP Code 76474.[4]

Geography

Sidney is located on Farm to Market Road 1689, approximately 9 mi (14 km) northwest of Comanche in western Comanche County.[3]

Education

The community's first school was founded in 1877. W.D. Cox was the teacher there. It continued to operate in 1940.[2] The Sidney Independent School District serves area students.
