Francis Burdett

Francis Burdett (25. tammikuuta 1770 – 23. tammikuuta 1844) oli brittiläinen baronetti ja 1800-luvun alkupuolen radikaalipoliitikko. Hän työskenteli vuosikymmeniä vapaan sanan, katolisten emansipaation ja poliittisten uudistusten nimeen päätyen jopa vankeuteen tämän vuoksi.

Burdett oli baronetti sir Robert Burdettin kolmas poika. Hän opiskeli Westminster Schoolissa ja tämän jälkeen Oxfordin yliopistossa, kunnes lähti muutaman vuoden opintomatkalle Ranskaan ja Sveitsiin. Hän oli Pariisissa Ranskan vallankumouksen alkuvaiheen aikana ja vieraili muutamassa kaupungin poliittisista klubeista. Hän palasi Englantiin vuonna 1793 ja avioitui Sophia Couttsin kanssa.[1][2]

Burdettin poliittinen ura alkoi vuonna 1796, kun hän pääsi alahuoneen jäseneksi Boroughbridgen lahonneen kauppalan edustajana. Hän alkoi pian puhua Ranskaa vastaan käydystä sodasta savuverhona, jolla käännettiin huomio pois Britanniassa itsessään vallitsevista poliittisista epäkohdista ja kansalaisoikeuksien puutteista. Hän myös vastusti John Horne Tooken pääsyn estämistä parlamenttiin – Horne Tookesta ja Burdettista tulikin ennen pitkää hyvät ystävät.[1]

Vuonna 1807 Burdett valittiin useiden myös hänen rahavarojaan kuluttaneiden poliittisten vastoinkäymisten jälkeen Westminsterin edustajaksi alahuoneeseen. Hän säilytti paikkansa yli 30 vuoden ajan.[1]

Peterloon verilöylyn jälkeen vuonna 1820 Burdettin kommentit viranomaisten toimista tapauksessa todettiin liian hyökkääviksi. Hän sai tuhannen punnan sakot ja kolmen kuukauden vankeustuomion.[1][2]

Vuoden 1825 jälkeen Burdettista tuli katolisten emansipaation julkinen puolestapuhuja, mikä toteutuikin vuonna 1829. Hänellä oli myös pieni vaikutus vuoden 1832 Reform Actin muodostumisessa, mutta hän alkoi tässä vaiheessa jo olla kyllästynyt aiemmin kannattamaansa radikalismiin. Osasyy tähän oli hänen inhonsa Daniel O’Connellia ja tämän periaatteita kohtaan. Hänet valittiin vielä vuoden 1837 vaaleissa parlamenttiin North Wiltshiren edustajaksi, missä tehtävässä pysyi kuolemaansa 23. tammikuuta 1844 asti.[1][2]
