Juutit

Juutit olivat germaaninen kansa, joiden uskotaan alun perin asuneen nykyisen Tanskan Jyllannissa (Jutland, ”Juutinmaa”) sekä Friisian rannikolla. Tacitus mainitsee kirjassaan Germania heimon nimeltä eudosit (eudoses), jonka on tulkittu tarkoittavan juutteja. Juutit esiintyvät muissa varhaisissa lähteissä myös nimillä Eote, Ytene, Yte ja Iutae.[1] Tacituksen mukaan eudosit olivat yksi niistä heimoista, jotka palvoivat Nerthus-jumalatarta.[2]

Juutit valloittivat yhdessä anglien, saksien ja friisien kanssa Englannin 400-luvulla. Beda Venerabiliksen mukaan juutit asettuivat Kentiin, Hampshireen ja Isle of Wightin saarelle. Tanskaan jääneet juutit sulautuivat sittemmin daaneihin.[3]
