Klondike

Kullankaivajien asumuksia Klondiken kultaryntäyksen aikana 1800-luvun lopulla.

Klondike on alue Kanadan luoteisosassa Yukonissa lähellä Alaskan rajaa. Alue sijaitsee Yukonjoesta haarautuvan Klondikejoen varrella. Alueelle suuntautui suuri kultaryntäys 1896–1898. Klondiken keskus on ryntäyksen aikana perustettu Dawson City. Valkoiset uudisasuttajat totesivat seudun alkuperäisen intiaaninimen Tr’ondëk (”vasarakivivesi” hänin kielellä) vaikeaksi ääntää ja alkoivat kutsua paikkaa Klondikeksi.

Klondiken kultaryntäys oli vuosia kestänyt kullankaivajien ja onnenonkijoiden massamuutto Klondikeen 1800-luvun lopulla. Klondikesta on löytynyt tähän mennessä noin 350 tonnia kultaa[1]. Ryntäys alkoi paikallisena vuonna 1896, jolloin alaskalaiset turkismetsästäjät saapuivat alueelle, mistä intiaani Skookum Jim oli löytänyt runsaasti kultaa Rabbit- eli Bonanzajoen pohjalta. Tieto kultalöydöstä saavutti Yhdysvallat vasta vuonna 1897, jolloin noin 6 000 ihmistä saapui Klondikeen. Matka Klondikeen muun muassa vuorisolien yli oli vaarallinen kylmän ja nälän uhan takia. Elämä Klondikessa oli yleensä pelkkää kovaa työtä, ja vain jotkut rikastuivat kullalla. Kullanetsijä saattoi kuolla muun muassa kaivoskuilun sortumiseen tai täyttymiseen vedellä. Vuonna 1897 kullanetsijät rakensivat Dawson Cityn kaupungin, jota kutsuttiin ”Pohjolan Pariisiksi”. Lopulta kaupungissa oli noin 30 000 asukasta. Vuonna 1898 ryntäys Klondikessa alkoi olla ohi ja painopiste siirtynyt Alaskan Nomeen. Niinpä Dawson City kutistui vuoteen 1905 mennessä 5 000 asukkaan pikkukaupungiksi. Nykyään siellä asuu noin 1 600 asukasta.
