Piazzale Loreto

Vasemmalta oikealle Nicola Bombaccin, Benito Mussoliniin, Clara Petaccin, Alessandro Pavolinin ja Achille Staracen ruumiit Piazzale Loretossa, Milanossa, 1945.

Piazzale Loreto on Milanon kaupungin keskusaukio. Se sijaitsee hallinnollisella vyöhykkeellä Zona 2, kaupungin keskustan koillisosassa Milanon päärautatieaseman läheisyydessä. Piazzale Loretolle johtaa kahdeksan eri suunnista tulevaa katua, muun muassa yksi kaupungin pääkaduista ja sen tärkein ostoskatu Corso Buenos Aires.[1]

Loreton aukio ja sitä ympäröivä samanniminen alue ovat saaneet nimensä Loreton kaupunkiin liittyvän pyhimyskultin mukaan. Aukion keskellä sijaitsee nykyään puisto sekä metroasema.

Toisen maailmansodan tapahtumat

29. huhtikuuta 1945 Piazzale Loreto oli näyttämönä yhdelle Italian historian tunnetuimmista tapahtumista, kun Italian vastarintaliikkeeseen kuuluneiden partisaanien päivää aikaisemmin ampuman diktaattori Mussolinin, hänen rakastajattarensa Clara Petaccin sekä muutaman muun merkittävän fasistin ruumiit asetettiin näytteille aukiolla sijainneelle huoltoasemalle. Lisäksi Piazzale Loretolla teloitettiin samana päivänä tunnettu fasistijohtaja Achille Starace. Myös hänen ruumiinsa asetettiin jaloistaan roikkumaan Esso-aseman katoksen reunalta.[1]

Huoltoasema oli sama, jossa natsi-Saksan armeija oli vuotta aikaisemmin teloittanut 15 milanolaista siviiliä. Heidät ammuttiin kostoksi partisaanien tekemistä iskuista. Sodan jälkeen aukiolla tehtiin mittavia liikennejärjestelyjä, eikä huoltoaseman paikka ole enää nähtävillä.
