Showalterin indeksi

Showalterin indeksi (engl. showalter index SI) kertoo ilmakehän epävakauden. Mitä pienempi SI, sitä suurempi on ukkosen todennäköisyys. Kun Suomessa indeksi alittaa 5, ukkosen mahdollisuus alkaa kasvaa. Keski-Euroopassa raja-arvona pidetään +4:ää, Pohjois-Amerikan tornadoalueilla vain negatiiviset arvot ovat merkittäviä. Showalterin indeksi muistuttaa lifted-indeksiä, mutta lifted-indeksi tarkastelee maanpinnan lähellä olevaa ilmaa, kun taas Showalter lasketaan ilmapaketille 850 hPa:n tasolta alkaen. Niinpä se osoittaa epävakautta ylempänä ilmakehässä vaikka lähellä maanpintaa olisi vakaa kerros.

Showalterin indeksi on helppo määrittää graafisesti radioluotausten avulla. Se on suosittu etenkin vuoristoisissa maissa.

SI-lukemat

  • > 4 Ukkosia ei melko varmasti tule
  • 1 – 4 Ukkoset mahdollisia, laukaisin tarvitaan, esimerkiksi vuoristo tai säärintama
  • 1 – -2 Ukkosen mahdollisuus normaalia suurempi
  • -2 – -3 Voimakkaita ukkosia melko varmasti
  • -3 – -5 Tornadon riski kasvaa
  • -5 – -10 Äärimmäisen epävakaa ilmakehä
  • < -10 Tornadon mahdollisuus erittäin suuri
