NGC 3943 est une galaxie spirale barrée située dans la constellation du Lion. Sa vitesse par rapport au fond diffus cosmologique est de 6 843 ± 23 km/s, ce qui correspond à une distance de Hubble de 100,9 ± 7,1 Mpc (∼329 millions d'al)[1]. NGC 3943 a été découverte par l'astronome prussien Heinrich d'Arrest en 1865.

On voit assez bien la barre au centre de la galaxie NGC 3943, mais seule la base de données HyperLeda la classifie de spirale barrée[4].

NGC 3943 présente une large raie HI[1]. Selon la base de données Simbad, NGC 3943 est une galaxie LINER, c'est-à-dire une galaxie dont le noyau présente un spectre d'émission caractérisé par de larges raies d'atomes faiblement ionisés[5].

À ce jour, une mesure non basée sur le décalage vers le rouge (redshift) donne une distance d'environ 12,400 Mpc (∼40,4 millions d'al)[6]. Cette valeur est totalement incohérente avec les valeurs de la distance de Hubble. Il s'agit sans doute d'une erreur de transcription.

  1. ↑ Les données utilisées par le site NASA/IPAC sont basées uniquement sur des publications scientifiques et, en qui concerne le diamètre des galaxies, elles sont parfois étonnantes. Le calcul de tous les diamètres est basé sur la moyenne des mesures de distances indépendantes du décalage vers le rouge, lorsqu'elles existent. Certaines fois, l'écart type des échantillons est plus grand que la moyenne et souvent il vaudrait mieux choisir la distance de Hubble pour faire ce calcul. Ici par exemple, la seule mesure indépendante est de 12,4 Mpc et ce n'est maifestement pas la distance de NGC 3943. Si on utilise la distance de Hubble de 100,9 Mpc, on obtient un diamètre d'environ 33,5 kpc (∼109 000 al) au lieu de 4,11 kpc indiqué sur le site.
