Xenocidio de Ruanda

O Xenocidio de Ruanda foi un asasinato en masa da etnia tutsi por membros hutus que tivo lugar en 1994 no estado africano de Ruanda. Ó longo de aproximadamente 100 días (dende o asasinato de Juvénal Habyarimana e Cyprien Ntaryamira o 6 de abril, ata mediados de xullo) máis de 500.000 persoas foron asasinadas segundo estimacións de Human Rights Watch.[1] O número total puido estar entre 500.000–1.000.000, ou o que é o mesmo, o 20% da poboación total do país. Foi o resultado da tensión e competición étnica entre a minoría tutsi, que controlou o poder na rexión durante séculos, e a maioría hutu, que conseguiu facerse co poder na rebelión de 1959–62.

En 1990, a Fronte Patriótica Ruandesa (RPF), un grupo rebelde composto por refuxiados tutsis, invadiu o norte de Ruanda dende Uganda nun intento de derrotar o goberno hutu. Comezaron a guerra civil ruandesa, loitando contra o réxime hutu, co apoio da África francófona e Francia.[2][3] Este feito aumentou a tensión étnica no país. En resposta, moitos hutu adheríronse á ideoloxía do Poder Hutu, que contaba co apoio dos medios estatais e independentes.

A ideoloxía do Poder Hutu baseábase en que os tutsi tentaban re-escravizar ós hutu e por iso debían resistirse a toda costa. Os continuos conflitos deron como resultado o desprazamento dun gran número de hutus no norte, así como periódicos asasinatos hutus de tutsis no sur. A presión internacional e o goberno hutu de Juvénal Habyarimana acabaron coa guerra en 1993. Tíñase intención de implementar os Acordos de Arusha.

O asasinato de Habyarimana en abril de 1994 desencadeou un reacción violenta dos hutus, que asasinaron en masa ós tutsis (e tamén a hutus opositores a prol da paz, que foron tomados por "traidores" e "colaboradores"). O xenocidio foi artellado por membros do Poder Hutu coñecidos como Akazu, moitos dos cales ocupaban posicións de importancia no goberno da nación. O xenocidio foi apoiado e coordinado polo goberno nacional, así como por militares, civís e medios de comunicación. Xunto cos militares, os principais responsables dos asasinatos foron dúas milicias hutu organizadas con ese obxectivo polos partidos políticos: Interahamwe e Impuzamugambi. Ademais, hai que ter en conta que unha vez que o xenocidio foi posto en marcha, gran número de civís tomaron parte nos asasinatos. Co acordo de paz rematado, o RPF tutsi reiniciou a súa ofensiva, derrotando ó exército e tomando o control do país.
