מוטי ספיישל (באנגלית: Moti Special) הייתה להקת גל חדש גרמנית, שהוקמה בשנת 1981 בהמבורג, על ידי נגן הגיטרה הדני נילס טוקסן, הקלידן הרומני מיכאל קרצו, הבסיסט/סולן מנפרד "ת'ייסי" ת'יירס והמתופף ריינהרד "דיקי" טארך.[1] לכל החברים היה ניסיון קודם בתור נגני אולפן או בתור מוזיקאים בתחומים שונים בעולם המוזיקה.[1]

ת'יירס החליט על שם הלהקה לאחר שביקר במסעדה הודית בלונדון יחד עם האמן הגרמני-ישראלי מוטי ארגמן, שם אכלו את המנה "המיוחדת" (החריפה במיוחד) של הבית.[2]

רקע

הלהקה הוקמה ב-1981 ורק ב-1985 זכתה להצלחה. על אף שהסינגל הראשון שלה, "Stop! Girls Go Crazy",[3] לא דורג במצעדים, הבא שיצא אחריו, "Cold Days, Hot Nights", היה להיט באירופה, והגיע למקום השלישי בגרמניה.[4] הסינגל השלישי "Don't Be So Shy" הגיע למקום התשיעי.[5] האלבום הראשון של הלהקה, Motivation, הגיע למקום העשרים במצעדים באותה שנה. מיכאל קרצו עזב את הלהקה כדי להמשיך בקריירת הסולו שלו, ועבודת הפקה עם אמנים שונים, כולל אשתו, זמרת הפופ הגרמנייה סנדרה.[6]

לא אירוע שום דבר חדש עם הלהקה עד שנת 1989, אז יצא סינגל חדש, "In Love We Stand".[7] האלבום, יחד עם שיר הנושא שלו, "Dancing for Victory" לא שיחזרו את הצלחת קודמו. כמו כן נוספו שני חברים חדשים: פרנק אדאל – שירה/קלידים ואנדרס מוסברג – בס. שניהם היו מוזיקאים משוודיה. עד אז, טוקסן וטארך היו החברים המקוריים היחידים שעדיין בלהקה.[1]

מיכאל קרצו פיתח מאז קריירה בין-לאומית בתור אמן סולו, משתף פעולה, כותב, מפיק, ובעיקר, כמייסד של אניגמה. הוא גם הקליט אלבום עם מנפרד ת'יירס בתור קרצו ות'יירס. אלבומם Belle Epoque יצא ב-1988.[8] מנפרד ת'יירס עדיין לקח חלק בלהקה, ובשנת 2005 השתתף באלבום The Voice of Leonard Bernstein, לצד ליאונרד ברנשטיין, חוסה קאררס וקירי טה קאנאווה, כמו גם מבצעים נוספים אחרים. יתרה מכך, הוא גם חבר בלהקת שילר (אנ'). בשנת 2006, רמיקסים רשמיים של "Cold Days, Hot Nights" (מאת הדי ג'יי/מפיק ארנולד פאלמר) זכו להצלחה מחודשת בגרמניה.
