The Fire Next Time adalah sebuah karya non-fiksi karangan James Baldwin yang mengandung dua buah esai terpisah: "My Dungeon Shook: Letter to my Nephew on the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Emancipation" dan "Down at the Cross: Letter from a Region of My Mind".

Judul buku ini berasal dari sepenggal bait dari "Mary Don't You Weep", sebuah spiritual kaum Afrika Amerika:[1][2]

Karangan pertama ditulis dalam bentuk surat kepada keponakan Baldwin yang berusia 14 tahun. Pada karangan ini, ia membahas mengenai pengaruh besar ras dalam sejarah Amerika Serikat. Karangan kedua, yang merupakan sebagian besar dari buku ini sendiri, membahas mengenai hubungan ras dan agama, berfokus pada pengalaman Baldwin di gereja Kristen pada saat mudanya, dan juga pengaruh Islam di Harlem.

Dua karangan pada buku ini pertama kali diterbitkan pada akhir tahun 1962: "Letter from a Region of My Mind" di majalah The New Yorker,[3] dan "My Dungeon Shook" di The Progressive.[4] Kedua karangan ini kemudian disatukan dan diterbitkan dalam bentuk buku pada tahun 1963 oleh Dial Press dan pada tahun 1964 di Inggris oleh Penguin Books. Secara umum, para kritikus menyambut hangat dan menganggapnya sebagai salah satu karya yang paling berpengaruh dalam hubungan ras di Amerika Serikat pada era 1960an.[5] Buku ini diterbitkan dalam format audio yang dinarasikan oleh Jesse L. Martin pada tahun 2008.
