Nkhotakota

Leirkofar í Nkhotakota

Nkhotakota (áður Kota Kota) er bær á ströndu Malaví-vatns í miðhluta Malaví. Áætlaður íbúafjöldi 2008 var 33.150 manns.

Saga

Nkhotakota mótaðist í upphafi af nokkrum þorpum á svæðinu en varð svo verslunarstaður fyrir arabíska þrælasala.[1] Landkönnuðurinn David Livingstone sannfærði leiðtogann Jumbe um að hætta þrælasölu af svæðinu, en fyrirkomulagið er enn í gildi. Sátu þeir undir tré einu og ræddu málin. Hastings Banda, fyrsti forseti landsins, fór með ræðu undir öðru tré í bænum á 7. áratugnum. Það tré er í kaldhæðni kallað „Livingstone-tréð“.[2] Árið 2001 voru mikil flóð í landinu og náðu þau einnig til Nkhotakota. Bærinn varð verst úti af svæðunum í miðhluta landsins.[3]

Landafræði

Á ströndu Malavívatns

Bærinn er í um 472 metra hæð yfir sjávarmáli[4] á ströndu Malavívatns. Hann stendur á malarhrygg og snýr að Nkhotakota-flói sem er úti fyrir ströndinni en hann er afmarkaður af sandrifi.[1]

Næstu bæir eru Makuta, Mbaluko og Mtenje.[4] Auk þess eru um 200 kílómetrar til Lílongve en 378 kílómetrar til Blantyre.[5]

Tungumál

Chichewa er aðaltungumál staðarins.[7] Swahili-nýlenda er einnig í bænum,[8] en einnig eru chewa-mælendur í suðurhluta hans.[9] Tonga-mælendur er að finna í norðurhlutanum.[10]

Í Nkhotakota er sjúkrahús[11] sem hefur reynst vel í baráttunni gegn HIV og eyðni. Samtökin Society for Women Against AIDS in Malawi (SWAM) (ísl. Konur gegn eyðni í Malaví) eru með tveggja ára verkefni í bænum.[12]

Commercial Bank of Malawi er með útibú við aðalbraut bæjarins sem liggur norður-suður.[2]

Samgöngur

Í Nkhotakota er ein af aðal höfnunum við Malavívatn.[13] Nálægasti flugvöllur er í Kasungu[4] Langferðabílar gang til Salima í tvær stundir á dag.[14] Þess að auki aka smárútur til Nkhata Bay.[15]
