Era in origine un diminutivo normanno del nome Alice[1][2][3][4], formato con l'aggiunta del suffisso -on[4].

Comune tanto in Francia quanto in Inghilterra durante il Medioevo[1], finì per rarificarsi nel XVII secolo[3]; in Scozia, dove si era diffuso nel XIII secolo[3], continuò ad avere una certa popolarità[4], e nel XX secolo fu riportato in voga anche nei paesi di lingua inglese[1][4]. Negli Stati Uniti, pressoché assente prima del 1946, divenne uno dei nomi più usati negli anni novanta[3].
