名称

プンタ・デル・エステという名称は、スペイン語で「（ラ・プラタ川の）東の岬」という意味である。「南のモナコ」、「大西洋の真珠」、「南米のハンプトンズ」、「南米のサントロペ」などという愛称があり、またアメリカ合衆国のマイアミやフランスのカンヌと比較される[1][2][3]。

観光

大西洋に面した南米有数のビーチ・リゾートである。世界各国から、特にアルゼンチン、ブラジル、パラグアイから富裕層がバカンスにやってくる[6]。2011年の人口は9,277人であるが、夏季が本格化する1月になると、バカンス客が押し寄せて人口は劇的に増加する[2]。プンタ・デル・エステを訪れる観光客の4分の3はアルゼンチン人である[2]。近年には、イギリス人モデルのナオミ・キャンベル、コロンビア人歌手のシャキーラ、イギリスのロックバンドであるローリング・ストーンズなどがプンタ・デル・エステでバカンスを過ごしている[2]。

歴史

リゾート地としての歴史が始まったのは20世紀初頭である[3]。

関税及び貿易に関する一般協定(GATT)における多角的貿易交渉であるウルグアイ・ラウンドは、1986年にプンタ・デル・エステで交渉開始が宣言された[7]。

2014年12月13日には、新たに始まった電気自動車レースシリーズであるFIAフォーミュラE世界選手権の第4戦の開催地となった[8]。ベイエリアの道路を市街地コースに設定して開催され、2015年は12月19日に第3戦として開催された。
