Selat Pulau Pinang adalah selat sepanjang 11 kilometer yang memisahkan Pulau Pinang dari Semenanjung Tanah Melayu.[1] Pulau Pinang terletak di sebelah barat saluran, manakala Seberang Perai, separuh daratan Negeri Pulau Pinang, adalah di sebelah timur. Hujung saluran utara dan selatan menyertai Selat Melaka, salah satu laluan maritim tersibuk di dunia.

Selat ini menyediakan laluan laut dalam ke Pelabuhan Pulau Pinang, yang terletak di Butterworth di Seberang Perai. Di samping itu, Dermaga Swettenham di George Town, ibu kota Pulau Pinang yang terletak di Pulau Pinang, adalah destinasi popular untuk kapal pesiar, yang menjadi salah satu pintu masuk utama ke Pulau Pinang.[2]

Sejak penubuhan Pulau Pinang sebagai tempat perdagangan Kerajaan British pada tahun 1786, Selat Pulau Pinang secara historis menjadi laluan penghantaran yang sibuk.[3]

Geografi

Selat Pulau Pinang memisahkan Pulau Pinang dari Semenanjung Melayu ke timur. Ia menghubungkan dengan Selat Melaka ke utara dan selatan.

Selat juga boleh dibahagikan kepada Saluran Utara dan Saluran Selatan. Saluran Utara merujuk kepada badan air di utara lereng timur laut Pulau Pinang, di mana George Town terletak, manakala Saluran Selatan merangkumi badan air di selatan itu.

Dua jambatan kini melintasi Selat Pulau Pinang - Jambatan Pulau Pinang dan Jambatan Kedua Pulau Pinang. Jambatan Pulau Pinang, yang siap pada tahun 1985, menghubungkan Perai di tanah besar dengan pinggir bandar Gelugor di Pulau Pinang. Pada 2014, Jambatan Kedua Pulau Pinang di selatan dibuka untuk kegunaan awam, sekali gus menggantikan Jambatan Pulau Pinang sebagai jambatan terpanjang di Asia Tenggara. Jambatan Pulau Pinang Kedua berjalan antara Batu Kawan di tanah besar dan Batu Maung di pulau itu.

Di samping dua jambatan, Rapid Ferry merupakan satu lagi hubungan pengangkutan antara Pulau Pinang dan tanah besar. Tidak seperti kedua-dua jambatan, perkhidmatan feri beroperasi di luar terminal di tengah-tengah George Town, yang menawarkan pautan terus ke pusat bandar bagi mereka yang memasuki daratan.
