Alexandria på Commons

Alexandria er en by i delstaten Virginia i USA. Den hadde ifølge den amerikanske folketelling i 2010 en befolkning på 139 966.[5] Byen ligger på Potomacelvens høyre (vestlige) bredd, ti km sør for det sentrale Washington, D.C..

Nærheten til den amerikanske hovedstaden preger byen og området. Mange av innbyggerne er tilknyttet regjeringsapparatet og forsvaret.

Den første bebyggelsen fant sted i 1695, med mindre det hadde vært noen indianerlandsbyer akkurat der tidligere en gang. Alexandria har en stor og vel bevart gamleby. Det meste av den lå – likesom hele dagens Arlington Conty, innenfor grensene til District of Columbia, et distrikt som ble utskilt fra statene Virginia og Maryland for å gi rom for de nybakte selvstendige Amerikas forente stater. I 1840-årene fant man ut at D.C. ikke trengte å være riktig så stort, og alt sør for elven Potomac ble tilbakeført til Virginia.

Byen Alexandria ble atskilt fra Alexandria County i 1870. Den gjenværende delen av Alexandria County forandret navn til Arlington County i 1920, og det fikk slutt på mange års forvirring.
