Australia som kontinent oppsto etter at Øst-Gondwana sprakk opp i ulike kratoner. Det blir i mange sammenhenger også referert til som Australo-Papua, Papua-Australia, Australia–New Guinea, Sahul, Meganesia eller Australinea.

Kontinentet inngår i Oseania og omfatter (etter størrelse) Australias fastland, Ny-Guinea, Tasmania, Seram og (trolig) Timor, samt alle tilstøtende øyer på samme kontinentalsokkel. Disse landmassene er i dag adskilt av sjøer som ligger over kontinentalsokkelen – Arafurasjøen og Torres-stredet mellom Australia og Ny-Guinea, og Bass-stredet mellom Australias fastland og Tasmania.[1]

New Zealand ligger ikke på samme kontinentalsokkel og er således ikke del av kontinentet Australia, men derimot del av det sunkne kontinentet Zealandia.[2] Som sådan inngår New Zealand i den større regionen kjent som Australasia.
