David Richards på Commons

David Julian Richards, baron Richards av Herstmonceux, (født 4. mars 1952) er en britisk general i British Army. Han var øverste sjef for de samlede internasjonale styrker sør i Afghanistan fra juli 2006 til 4. februar 2007 da han ble avløst av den amerikanske generalen Dan McNeill. Han ble utnevnt til sjef for generalstaben den 28. august 2009. Videre ble han sjef for forsvarsstaben fra oktober 2010, en stilling han ble i til juli 2013.

I juli 2006 fikk han kommandoen over de internasjonale styrker (International Security Assistance Force) i Sør-Afghanistan. Omtrent samtidig utnevnt til fire-stjerners general. I denne stillingen ble Richards den første britiske offiseren som kunne kommandere amerikanske styrker siden den andre verdenskrig.^{[trenger referanse]} På hjem fra Afghanistan vendte han tilbake til sin tidligere grad som var generalløytnant.

Han har også tjenestegjort i borgerkrigen i Sierra Leone.^{[trenger referanse]}

Richards ble i dronningens nyttårsliste for 2011 forfremmet til storkorsridder av Badets orden.^[4] Han var tidligere utnevnt til kommandørridder av samme orden, ble derved opphøyet i ridderstanden og fikk rett til å føre tiltaleformen sir foran sitt navn. Richards er kommandør av Den britiske imperieordenen og har mottatt Distinguished Service Order. I februar 2014 ble han gjort til life peer som baron Richards av Herstmonceux, og dermed medlem av overhuset.

Han er gift og har to døtre.
