Fleskumsommeren

Fleskumsommeren (eller Fleskum-sommeren) på gården Fleskum i Bærum var et kunstnerkollektiv sommeren 1886, som innledet nyromantikken i norsk malerkunst.[1]

Sommeren 1886 samlet en rekke fremtrendende norske kunstnere seg på Christian Skredsvigs gård Fleskum i Bærum. De sentrale personene var, i tillegg til verten, Gerhard Munthe, Eilif Peterssen, Harriet Backer, Kitty Kielland og Erik Werenskiold.[2] Fleskumsommeren er blitt et begrep innen norsk kunsthistorie, og regnes med sine mange stemningsbilder som starten på nyromantikken i norsk malerkunst.

Det som preger bildene er skumringen, i forhold til tidligere da dagen stod i fokus. Dette fikk store konsekvenser for fargebruken. Sommernatten er spesiell for Skandinavia. Vannflaten ble ofte malt, og vannflaten i seg selv ble sett som et symbol på menneskets sinn og på naturen. Det var kunstkritikeren Andreas Aubert som i en artikkel[hvor?] lanserte tanken om å bruke det særegne nordiske lyset som uttrykk for nordisk kunsts egenart og nordiskhet.
