London Symphony Orchestra er en albumserie utgitt av Frank Zappa i to deler, London Symphony Orchestra, Vol. I i 1983 og London Symphony Orchestra, Vol. II i 1987. De to albumene ble innspilt samtidig, i januar 1983. De to albumene ble senere slått sammen og gitt ut på nytt på en Rykodisc CD med navnet CD as London Symphony Orchestra Vol. I & II i 1995.

Bakgrunn

Volume I omfatter London Symphony Orchestra som framfører fire instrumentale komposisjoner — «Sad Jane», «Pedro's Dowry», «Envelopes» og «Mo 'n Herb's Vacation», fra innspillinger i januar 1983. Albumet var Zappas fjerde utgivelse sammen med et orkester, etter Lumpy Gravy (1967), 200 Motels (1971) og Orchestral Favorites (1979).

Albumet ble innspilt med en digital 24-spors opptager. Det var en av de tidligste digitale "multitrack" innspillingene av et orkester. Ved å spille inn orkesteret med mange mikrofoner nære instrumentene, ble lyden på albumene mer detaljert enn mulig med tidligere stereo innspillingsteknikk. Stor bruk av editering ble brukt for å rette musikalske feil.

Den originale vinyl-LP innspillingen ble jobbet mye med i studio for å skjule falske og feile toner og også legge på litt ekko for å få sporene ekstra spesielle. Disse "lydforbedringene" ble fjernet da da innspillingene ble mikset på nytt remixed da albumet ble gjenutgitt på CD i 1995. Benne versjonen av albumet ble kombinert med London Symphony Orchestra, Vol. II (1987), og utgitt på nytt på en Rykodisc CD som London Symphony Orchestra Vol. I & II.
