As Is é um telefilme americano de 1986 dirigido por Michael Lindsay-Hogg. Foi adaptado por William M. Hoffman de sua peça homônima de 1985. O filme é estrelado por Jonathan Hadary, Robert Carradine, Colleen Dewhurst e Joanna Miles. Estreou no Showtime em 27 de julho de 1986. Várias redes rejeitaram a adaptação para a TV. Hadary e Carradine foram ambos nomeados para o CableACE Awards. O filme é centrado em um grupo de amigos gays que lidam com a AIDS na Cidade de Nova Iorque.[1][2]

Sinopse

O filme retrata o efeito que a AIDS, uma epidemia relativamente nova na década de 1980, tem sobre um grupo de amigos gays que vivem na Cidade de Nova Iorque. O filme começa com o casal gay Saul e Rich, que se separaram recentemente. Depois que Rich contrai AIDS de seu novo amante, Chet, ele retorna para Saul, que acaba cuidando dele. O filme também mostra como as pessoas com AIDS foram tratadas pelo público americano, médicos, colegas de trabalho, familiares e amigos. No final, Rich reconhece a importância de ter um parceiro que esteja disposto a compartilhar a dor da morte e também a fazer seus próprios sacrifícios pessoais para cuidar adequadamente de outra pessoa.[1]

Notas de produção

William Hoffman, que escreveu o roteiro do filme e a peça teatral, disse que o filme foi atenuado em relação à versão teatral, principalmente em sua linguagem. O produtor executivo Michael Brandman disse que não queria "turvar a água com palavrões gratuitos. Mantivemos parte da linguagem, mas acho que é destacada de forma mais eficaz porque é usada com mais moderação. Palavras de quatro letras ofendem tremendamente algumas pessoas, e não queríamos correr o risco de perder aquelas pessoas que poderiam se beneficiar com o que o artigo dizia."[3] O filme foi filmado em Toronto, com um orçamento de US$ 600.000, um pouco mais alto do que outras peças filmadas apresentadas no Showtime.[3]

Recepção crítica

A Entertainment Weekly escreveu que os personagens do filme são "trazidos vividamente à vida pelo roteiro eloquentemente brutal do dramaturgo William Hoffman", e deu ao filme uma classificação A.[4] Richard Christiansen, do Chicago Tribune, escreveu "o fluxo rápido e impressionista de imagens, que funcionou bem no teatro, parece difundir o drama na versão cinematográfica". Ele também afirmou que Jonathan Hadary "muitas vezes apresenta suas falas com um soco mais adequado ao palco do que ao ambiente naturalista dos filmes". Mas, no geral, ele disse que a “profunda questão de aceitar a vida diante da morte é clássica e atemporal”.[5]

O New York Times escreveu que o filme "encontra sua âncora emocional na atuação profundamente sensível de Jonathan Hadary como o amigo que atua como atendente leal", e embora o filme "ocasionalmente exagere, como em uma tentativa estranha de epifania, é impulsionado pelo seu humor, à medida que os personagens encontram uma libertação, se não um alívio, ao examinarem o seu próprio desamparo."[6] Hadary e Carradine foram indicados ao CableACE Awards de Ator em especial teatral ou dramático.[7]
