Nota: Esta classificação pode alternativamente ser tratada como apenas uma família, a família Polypodiaceae, com as famílias enumeradas consideradas subfamílias dessa família única.[1]

Eupolypods I é um clade de fetos (pteridófitos) da ordem Polypodiales, classe Polypodiopsida,[2] que na classificação de Christenhusz & Chase (2014) é equivalente à família Polypodiaceae.[1]

Descrição

O grupo provavelmente divergiu do clade eupolypods II (= Aspleniaceae da classificação de Christenhusz & Chase (2014))[1] durante o Cretáceo Médio. A divergência é suportada tanto por dados moleculares como por uma característica morfológica, frequentemente ignorada, da vasculatura do pecíolo.

A característica vascular atrás referida consiste na presença na maioria das espécies incluídas no clade eupolypods I de três feixes vasculares. As únicas excepções a esta regra são os fetos do grupo dos Grammitidoideae, que apenas apresentam um, e o género Hypodematium, que apresenta dois. Esta característica difere do clade eupolypods II cujos membros na sua maioria apresentam dois feixes vasculares (excepto os fetos do grupo Blechnoideae, que geralmente apresentam três destes feixes).[3]
