Gothelo I od Lotaringije

Gothelo (ili Gozelo) (cca. 967 – 19. april 1044), zvani Veliki, bio je vojvoda Donje Lorene od 1023. te Gornje Lorene od 1033. Također je bio markgrof Antwerpena od 1005. (ili 1008) i grof Verduna.

Gothelo je bio najmlađi sin grofa Godfreya I od Verduna i Matilde Billung, kćeri saksonskog vojvode Hermana. Nakon očeve smrti je dobio marku Antwerpen i postao vazal svog brata Godfreya II, koji je proglašen vojvodom Donje Lotaringije (Lorene) 1012. Brata je naslijedio 1023. uz podršku cara Heinricha II, ali mu se pružao otpor sve dok pobunjenike 1025. nije slomio Konrad II. Kada je Kuća Bar, koja je vladala Gornjom Lorenom, izumrla 1033. sa smrću njegovog rođaka Frederika III, Konrad ga je proglasio vojvodom oba vojvodstva, nastojeći ga iskoristiti u obrani od Oda II, grofa od Bloisa, Meaux,a Chartresa i Troyesa (kasnije Champagne).

U bitci kod Bara 15. novembra 1037, Gothelo je zadao odlučujući poraz Odu, koji je pokušavao stvoriti nezavisnu državu između Francuske i Njemačke. Odo je poginuo u bitci.

Gothelo je umro 19. aprila 1044. i sahranjen je u opatijskoj crkvi Bilsen. Njegov sin Godfrey ga je naslijedio u Gornjoj Loreni, ali je car Heinrich III odbio predati Donju Lorenu. Kada je Godfrey protiv toga protestirao, Heinrich III je zaprijetio da će vojvodstvo predati Godfreyevom nesposobnom bratu Gothelu. To je izazvalo dugi ustanak u Lotaringiji (1044 - 1056) pri čemu su Godfreyu pomagali brojni saveznici (grofovi Flandrije i Leuvena).
