Hipotalamus koordinira rad žlezda endokrinog sistema, reguliše emocije, i reguliše određene visceralne aktivnosti (rad određenih unutrašnjih organa). Od njega polazi, i sa ostalim delovima mozga ga povezuje limbički sistem koji je bitan za manifestovanje emocija.^[1] Pored njega se nalazi hipofiza i međumozak.
