UFO: Enemy Unknown ili X-COM: Enemy Unknown je kompjuterska igra kompanije Microprose iz 1994. godine koja se nalazi na praktički svim popisima najboljih igara svih vremena, a po njoj su napisane i dvije knjige. Postoje verzije ove igre za Amigu, CD32, PC i PlayStation

Uvod

U drugoj polovici osamdesetih godina dvadesetog stoljeća Julian Gollop je napravio kompjutersku igru imena Laser Squad koja je imala veliki uspjeh na tržištu i verzije za sve kompjutere onog doba. Nakon tog prvobitnog uspjeha Gollop je počeo raditi na nastavku te igre i traženju izdavača s jačim financijskim sredstvima. Izbor je na kraju pao na Microprose koji je predložio određene promjene u igri. Spoj vizije Gollopa i Microprosea će 1994. godine postati igra imena UFO: Enemy Unknown.

Igra

Priča igre počinje 1998. godine kada se Zemlja našla pod UFO invazijom. Kao odgovor na pretnju koju UFO predstavlja najmoćnije države svijeta su odlučile osnovati Extraterrestrial Combat Unit kojom igrač upravlja. Sama strateška igra počinje 1. 1. 1999. godine, a igrač na početku ima jednu bazu i međunarodno financiranje. Količina novca kojeg on dobiva svakog prvog u mjesecu ovisi o njegovom uspjehu u borbi protiv UFO.

Borba u igri se između taktičkog tima kojeg vodi igrač i UFO se vodi na mjestima gdje je on oboren ili gdje se spustio. U borbama igrač vodi ekipu od nekoliko vojnika koji bore protiv određenog broja vojnika iZ UFO. Visoke ocjene igri poklanja doza realnosti koju poklanjaju sljedeće opcije:

Jedini način za pobjediti u igri je otkriti lokaciju glavne UFO baze i osvojiti ju tijekom bitke.

Ocjene igre

Svi važniji kompjuterski časopisi svog doba postavljaju igru UFO: Enemy Unknown na popis najboljih igara svih vremena. Computer Gaming World je postavio ovu igru na popis najboljih svih vremena 2001 i 2005 godine kada prestaje s izlaženjem. Na listi časopisi PC Gamer igra je u top 15 2000, 2001 i 2005. godine, dok ju je časopis Pelit stavio na drugo mjesto za razdoblje 1992 - 2007 godina .[1]. Najbolje ocjene UFO: Enemy Unknown redovno dobiva od kompjuterskog portala IGN koji pored ostalog upravlja sajtovima GameSpy i GameStats. Na njegovim listama ova igra je bila najbolja svih vremena 2000, 2007 i 2009 godine [2][3][4].

Nakon prodanih 600.000 primjeraka igre samo u PC verziji, Microprose je licencom zaštitio ime američke verzije (X-Com) i ubrzo izdao nastavak, nakon kojega slijede mnogi drugi. Ti nastavci su:
