Astronóm alebo staršie hvezdár je vedec, ktorého odbor výskumu je astronómia.

Astronóm Zásluhy
Hipparchos a Ptolemaios Určili pozície okolo 1 000 jasných hviezd, snažili sa objasniť usporiadanie sveta odmietnutím geocentrického modelu a klasifikovali hviezdy podľa zdanlivej hviezdnej veľkosti.
Aristarchos Prvá známa osobnosť, ktorá zaviedla heliocentrický model vesmíru.
Nasír al-Dín al-Túsí Perzský astronóm, vytvoril prvý celý systém rovinnej a sférickej trigonometrie. Vypracoval veľmi presné tabuľky pohybov planét a pomenoval mnoho hviezd. Jeho planetárny systém bol najpokročilejší v jeho dobe a používal sa až do zavedenia heliocentrického modelu. Tusiho pár vyriešil lineárny pohyb do sumy dvoch kruhových pohybov. Vypočítal hodnotu precesie na 51' a podieľal sa na konštrukcii a používaní astrolábu.
Galileo Galilei Prvý človek, ktorý použil ďalekohľad na pozorovanie oblohy. Za svoje objavy bol inkvizíciou odsúdený na domáce väzenie.
Johannes Kepler Navrhol eliptické dráhy planét a sformuloval zákony pohybu planét.
Isaac Newton Publikoval knihu Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica (1687), obsahujúcu "Newtonove pohybové zákony", fundamentálne zákony mechaniky, a vysvetlil Keplerove zákony pohybu planét. Predpovedal dráhy planét.
Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar Rozsiahla práva na internom mechanizme hviezd, čiastočne známy vďaka určeniu efektu špeciálnej relativity na hviezdach, prvý vypočítal Chandrasekharovu medzu, čo dokázal bez kalkulačky na ceste loďou.
Henrietta Swanová Leavittová Skatalogizovala cefeidy vo Veľkom Magellanovom mraku, v roku 1912 objavila vzťah medzi svietivosťou a periodicitou cefeíd, čo viedlo k neskoršej práci Hertzprunga.
Ejnar Hertzsprung Určil vzdialenosti niekoľkých cefeíd, po tom, ako boli cefeidy objavené v iných galaxiách, ako napríklad v Galaxii Androméda, vzdialenosť ktorých mala byť určená.
Edwin Hubble Objavil expanziu vesmíru (Hubblov zákon). Bol po ňom pomenovaný Hubblov vesmírny ďalekohľad.
