Slayer je americká thrash metalová hudobná skupina pôsobiaca od počiatku 80. rokov. Bola založená Kerrym Kingom, ktorý potom našiel na post basgitaristu Toma Arayu (s ktorým tvorí jednu z najproduktívnejších autorských dvojíc na metalovej scéne) a na miesto druhého gitaristu našiel Jeffa Hannemana. Bubeníkom sa stal Dave Lombardo. Kapela sa počas chvíle stala veľmi populárnou v undergroundovej scéne a spolu s kapelami ako Metallica, Anthrax a Megadeth založila thrash metalovú scénu.[3]

Najväčším úspechom bolo vydanie albumu Reign in Blood, ktorým ale dosiahli podľa kritikov určitý zenit. Dokonca dokázali, že negatívna reklama je najlepšia reklama. Úvodnou pesničkou „Angel of Death“ (Anjel smrti) rozpútali spor o to, či náhodou nie sú "nazi" kapelou, pretože song pojednáva o Dr. Jozefovi Mengelem. A navyše Jeff má doma zbierku fašistických vyznamenaní a medailí z druhej svetovej vojny. Ale napriek všetkým týmto prekážkam dosiahol rýchlo album Reign in Blood 500 000 predaných kópií a tak sa stal prvou zlatou doskou kapely Slayer.[4]

Po roku 1986 kapelu na chvíľu opustil Dave Lombardo. Na jeho mieste bubnoval za neho Toni Scaglione z kapely Whiplash. V roku 1988 prišlo rázne spomalenie na novom albume s názvom South of Heaven. Aj napriek spomaleniu a rôznym progresívnym tendenciám ho skalní fanúšikovia vzali a predalo sa ho 500 000 kusov. Album Seasons in the Abyss z roku 1990 sa vďaka 1 000 000 predaných kusov stal platinovým. Nasledovalo megaturné Clash of Titans. V roku 1992 na miesto bubeníka prišiel Paul Bostaph.

Ďalšie obvinenie z nacizmu prišlo v súvislosti s vydaním albumu Divine Intervention v roku 1994. Vyslovil ho Max Cavalera, ktorý pôsobil vtedy v kapele Sepultura. Slayer to oplatili tým, že vo francúzskej televízii pri jednom z rozhovorov prehlásili: „Sepultura je banda brazílskych debilov“ ("a bunch of lowlife cocksuckers from Brazil").[5][6] Po odchode Maxa Cavaleru zo Sepultury sa vzťah medzi kapelami zlepšil.

V roku 2001 sa znovu za bubny skupiny posadil Lombardo. V tom istom roku 11. septembra bol vydaný album God Hates Us All. Najväčšou zaujímavosťou bol deň 11. September kedy bol spáchaný teroristický atentát na Svetové obchodné centrum známe aj ako dvojičky Album bol nominovaný na cenu Grammy za najlepšie živé prevedenie skladby Disciple a za najlepší album. Nezískalo však ani jednu z cien. Koncom toho istého roku sa do skupiny vrátil pôvodný bubeník Lombardo. V ďalších rokoch vyšli skupine 2 DVD – War at Warfield a Still Reigning. 8. augusta 2006 vyšiel nový album Christ Illusion. Za skladbu „Final six“ z tohto albumu dostala kapela cenu Grammy za najlepší metalový výkon. Zatiaľ posledný radový album World Painted Blood vyšiel v roku 2009. Od roku 2011 sa Jeff Hanneman liečil na nekrotizujúcu fasciitídu po uhryznutí pavúkom. Na koncertoch ho nahradil Gary Holt z kapely Exodus. Hanneman však so skupinou vystúpil na koncerte Big 4 v apríli 2011. [3] 2. mája 2013 zomrel na zlyhanie obličiek. [4] V tom istom mesiaci Lombardo definitívne odišiel z kapely po finančných nezhodách a vystriedal ho niekdajší bubeník Paul Bostaph.

Kapela sa v roku 2019 rozlúčila s fanúšikmi dokumentom SLAYER - REPENTLESS KILLOGY a posledným koncertom v Los Angles.
