Tepna

Tepna alebo artéria (skratka: a., plurál aa.[1][2]; lat. arteria, pl. arteriae) je cieva, v ktorej prúdi krv smerom zo srdca (cor), hlavne vo veľkom krvnom obehu (pozri obehová sústava), a to pod vysokým tlakom (pozri krvný tlak), takže po poranení krv z tepny strieka rytmicky s činnosťou srdca. Tomu, že krv prúdi tepnou pod vysokým tlakom zodpovedá aj jej stavba – silná svalová vrstva v stene.[3] Výnimkou je pľúcny kmeň (truncus pulmonalis) alebo pľúcne tepny (arteriae pulmonales), ktoré vedú odkysličenú krv z pravej komory do pľúc. Steny tepien sa pri každom údere rozťahujú a sťahujú, to znamená že vzniká pulz alebo tep. Tepny sú uložené hlbšie a neobsahujú chlopne.[chýba zdroj]
